new year's social

14.04.2023 // together with breadwinners, we hosted a social with a mini “pub” quiz in line with new year’s celebrated by many southeast asian and south asian cultures on April 14th

the menu was themed coconut and spice, flavours that tie these cultures together and we learnt more about new year’s traditions around the world.

everything sweet and tangy

25.09.2022 // yet again crashed Care4Calais‘ weekly hyde park picnic before the winter hit.

we brought the tropics to cold and gloomy london with some coconut inspired bites. our homies reminisced coconut recipes from back home and how they missed cooking and trying new flavours – reminding us of why we started homieats.

a kaleidoscope summer picnic.

31.07.2022 // we crashed Care4Calais’ weekly hyde park activities for a kaleidoscope summer picnic.

the weather really showed up in the end and we had fun by the water and talked about all the food we miss from home.

the sandos were a little too big for our little humans, but they were still a hit!

rainbow picnic

15.05.2022 // our first ever kids rainbow “indoor” picnic was a blast. the rain didn’t stop us from having a blast – painting rainbows, drawing ramadan stories and of course eating, particularly fruit skewers.

many thanks to Made in Hackney for the space to host the social,our friends at Shahre Farang Stories and Kirby Allie for oganising fun activities for kids, Paiwand and Care4Calais for helping us reach out to families.

an iftar across oceans...

04.04.2022 // we traced similarities as they flow through the ocean to curate the perfect iftar menu. it was heartwarming to see young people seeking asylum reconnecting with foods from home and celebrate with their new community in the UK during the holy month of Ramadan

Thank you to Care4Calais and Breadwinners for hosting us and and bringing people together and creating a magical night!

“In my country in Sudan, we all eat outside so people who pass by we can invite them – this reminded me of that.

These (falafels) were from my country, these were very good!”

– Sudanese refugee

“I love it all. Food’s special. I love meeting people because it reminds me of home when we’re all sitting and chatting with each other”

– young person seeking asylum

The food was amazing! The aloo samosa, the chicken, my son loved the beef pie. Just one thing, you could’ve cooked the rice a little bit more. But I’m only saying that because we’ve missed having food from home – thank you.

– Afghan refugee

It’s the first time in two months my wife and I have even talked about the taste of food. We have no choice but to eat what we’re given in the hotels. But this felt like what we had back home!

– Afghan refugee

welcome tea.

26.10.21 // Our first event – done and dusted. We recreated a taste of home for around 40 refugees from Afghanistan who recently arrived in the UK. their smiles and beautiful words only made us realise why we started homieats in the first place.

Special thanks to Al Manaar for opening their doors and giving us a space to host the event.

Support us on crowdfunder!

Why we need your support:

We hope to host regular social events for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

We look to create spaces where they can enjoy a taste of home, meet new people, and feel welcome in our communities.

We provide work opportunities for those with refugee status as Food Product Developers / Storytellers to craft plates and cook meals at our events.

The funds raised will be used to:

  • create employment opportunities for individuals with refugee status;
  • support our current Food Product Developers and Storytellers;
  • purchase ingredients required for cooking meals;
  • arrange transport for refugees and asylum seekers in hotels to attend events;
  • rent event spaces
